Caramelized Crispy Fennel

Caramelized Crispy Fennel

Caramelized Crispy Fennel is the perfect addition to your favorite dishes. While it tastes similar to sautéed onions, cooked fennel naturally has a slightly spicy kick to it with a wonderful hint of anise (black licorice). The next time you plan to sauté onions consider trying Caramelized Crispy Fennel instead.

Fennel Preparation

Fennel can be found at most markets. For this recipe, remove tops of the fennel (see photo above), reserve fennel fronds for garnish, cut bulbs in half vertically removing any outer damaged leaves, and then julienne(slice).

Caramelizing and Crisping the Fennel

Heat oil in a large pan over medium-low heat. Add fennel and salt, and cook for 30 minutes. Then increase the heat to medium for the remaining 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until caramelized with crispy edges, 45 minutes total.

Notes

Caramelized Fennel pairs amazingly well with Shawarma-Spiced Lamb and any burger.
Large white/yellow onions could be substituted if you’re not a fennel fan but I strongly urge you to try the fennel first.
